Present modern day life lays great emphasis on hygiene and having a clean body. But we have yet to begin cleaning our insides as well. Yoga demands that its practitioner be in supremely good health. Hence cleansing of the insides is important to ensure good health and long life. The ancient system of Yoga recommends six methods of internal cleansing or Shatkriyas.
Shatkriyas are the different processes of internal hygiene established in the discipline of Yoga for the purposes of internal purification. These exercises perform internal cleansing exercises and ensure that the body is kept fit and the practice of meditation may be pursued without discomfort. Internal cleansing exercises lay the foundation of spiritual awakening and should be carried out regularly to ensure that one derives maximum benefit from the practice of these yoga exercises.
Shatkriyas purify the physical body and increase the efficiency of the internal systems of the body. These systems also enhance the efficiency of every Yoga exercise. Shatkriyas are more beneficial to those who start with Yoga at an advanced age or those who are suffering from diseases due to lack of internal cleansing.
