According to Wikipedia,
Paschimottanasana (Sanskrit: पश्चिमोत्तानासन, Paścimottānāsana), translated as “intense stretch of the west”, is a seated asana.
There are a few variations to the basic method of doing Paschimottasana, also called as Seated Forward Fold Pose as shown in the video here. If you cannot reach your hands to the feet:
- Try using a yoga strap around the feet. Next, hold the strap using both hands.
- Then bend the knees so that you can reach the feet using your hands. Finally try stretching so that you can place your head on your knees.
Benefits:
- Seated forward fold helps stretch the muscles of the entire back. Right from the back to the ankles.
- It also stimulates the urinary and reproductive system and calms the emotions and nervous system.
- The pose is also believed to be helpful in conditions such as insomnia, fatigue, obesity, infertility and high blood pressure.
Cautions:
- You should not be performing this asana if you have suffered from a recent or chronic injury to the hips, arms, ankles or shoulders.
