The Anulom – Vilom Pranayama is considered to be the Pranayama of Nadi Shuddhi. This is because it is one of the most effective methods of achieving the purification of the nadis. The main aim of Anulom-Vilom is to purify the subtle channels, but it also helps clean the physical channels of the body.
There are two basic types of Anulom-Vilom Pranayama – Sagarbh and Nirgarbh. Sagarbh means one with seed. This indicates that this Pranayama requires one to concentrate on a particular beej – ”seed sound” or mantra. When practiced with such mental focus, sagarbh anulom vilom pranayama helps purify the channels of the physical body.
In nirgarbh Anulom Viloma Pranayama there is no such need for mental application. This type of Pranayama helps in cleansing the physical channels of the gross body.
