Pranayama : Where and How

Choose to do Pranayama in a clean, orderly and quiet place without too many disturbances. If you choose to do Pranayama try and find a place that doesn’t have a lot of wind blowing through it. The air should smell good – preferably of flowers. If and when you burn incense, try to ensure that the smoke from the incense sticks is blown away leaving a pleasant smell.

Practice Pranayama after having a bath. Do not engage in Pranayama immediately after eating. Try and practice it on an empty stomach. Wear clean, scant clothing. Your success in Pranayama depends on your observance of two restraints.

If you are guided by a guru in your Yoga, follow every word of the Guru. Failure to do so might cause you to fail in the practice of Yogasana and you might also succumb to disease. Yogis in ancient times used to select a raised earthen platform for practicing Pranayama. They used to cover this with an asana of their choosing. in the present day, you can choose any raised platform, preferably of wood or none at all with an asana for you to be able to sit.

The next step is to choose a meditative posture for Pranayama. Yogis suggest Padmasana, siddhasana, swastikasana and sukhasana for this purpose. You must also take care to start doing Pranayam only in certain seaasons. The Indian climate is divided into six seasons – Vasant, Grishma, Varsha, Sharad, Hemant and Shishir.

Only Vasant – March – April and Sharad – September – October are considered to be the best times to start Pranayama. One can start practising asana in other seasons too, but the chances of being successful at Pranayama in other seasons are slim.
