Dosha of Ayurveda

Ayurveda concentrates on Holistic healing and hence the Ayurvedic approach to healing is very different as compared to the usual approach towards healing followed by most prevalent methodologies. This is because Ayurveda doesn’t just try to cure the disease in an individual. It focuses on the health and the body as well as physical constitution of an individual and then provides a solution that takes care of the health of the individual in its entirety.

Ayurveda believes that a human being constitutes of five different elements and these elements combine to form the three Doshas Vata, Pitta and Kapha.

Ayurvedic treatments usually lay emphasis on the doshas/prakriti of human beings before proceeding with the treatment. Ayurveda believes that the imbalance in the tridoshas of Vata – ether/air, Pitta – fire and Kapha – water/earth causes a problem in the smooth functioning of the body. Ayurveda focuses on the physical constitution, susceptibility to diseases, mental make up and the life style of an individual to determine his Dosha or disease and cure a person.

Vata is considered to be a force made up of air or ether. It is believed that the proportion of air and ether in the body determines how active Vata is.

Pitta is considered to be a force that is created due to water and fire. Both these forces modulate and control each other and are vital for all life processes to occur.

Kapha on the other hand is the balance that occurs between water and earth. Kapha is considered to be the force that provides structure and lubrication.

Vata, Pitta and Kapha provide different types of doshas and help as well as harm the body in different ways too. All these doshas are associated with different body types and they affect different bodies in different manners. More about that in coming posts.
