Surya Namaskar

Surya Namaskar aka Sun Salutation is a sequence of Hatha Yoga asanas performed for the Sun God. Surya Namaskar allows the development of the lungs. By the process of Surya Namaskara, lungs become wider, bronchial tubes develop and one gets to breathe in more quantities of oxygen in the body. Because of regular practice of the asana, the smallest bronchial tubes and capillaries that circulate blood are all flooded with breath and hence the capillaries are not hindered thus helping one to be rid of asthama.

Surya Namaskara in its simplest form is a group of 12 different asanas performed in a sequence with a specific breathing pattern. Surya Namaskara has three principal aspects : form, rhythm and vital energy. It also helps in reducing fat from all parts of the body as it stretches and hence tones all the different body parts.

Surya Namaskar should be performed early in the morning or late in the evening when the sun is at the horizons. Surya namaskar should be performed using a mat. It should be performed only after a gap of at least 2 hours after having food. One should recite the specific mantras at the beginning of each Surya Namaskar. Surya Namaskar should be performed by facing the sun. Remember that pregnant women are not advised to practice this asana, but women should perform Surya Namaskar during their periods as it helps in improving digestion, and the flow of energy as well as the outflow of waste from the body.   Repetition of Surya Namaskar will help one obtain and maintain high fitness levels without the use or need of any equipment.
