The science of self healing. Metals in Ayurveda.

This is one of my personal investigations. This is the first post in the series.

Ayurveda: The Science of Self Healing – is a book by Dr. Vasant Lad – quite a famous nowadays author of books on Ayurveda.

Here is what I found so far (I’m only starting – and will appreciate any useful comment/answer/suggestion you may have. – Thanks a lot!)

  • Some parts of the book are said to be reviewed/summarized in the article where I read (I’m not giving a reference because I don’t think the article is accurate):
  • “According to ayurvedic medicine, when gold, silver, iron, and other heavy metals come into contact with human tissue, their electromagnetic energy affects the body at a cellular level. They project an ‘astral light’ which counteracts unwanted cosmic energy.” – I have no problem with the second part about astral light – this is something not measurable by modern science and existence or lack of such field, in the metals in particular – is not provable. If you have a different opinion, supported by studies and references you could provide – please share! I do have problem with the first part, with “their electromagnetic energy affects the body at a cellular level” – I don’t think this is a correct statement. Electromagnetic fields are well measurable by modern science, I don’t think it is shown in any serious scientific study that wearing a metal band would affect body at a cellular level by electromagnetic energy.
  • Further: “There is a possibility of toxins within even pure metals; so, in ayurvedic medicine all the healing metals, including copper, gold, silver, and iron, are purified before use. The element is usually heated and then treated with a natural substance, such as oil, buttermilk, or ghee (an ayurvedic medicinal product made from unsalted butter).” - It maybe possible (reference anybody?) to clean metals heated or not with oil – but it sounds extremely unlikely that toxins could be cleared from it in such a way…
  • Then on multiple occasions in one or another form I read something like: “Copper, gold, silver, and iron metals in ayurvedic medicine have been considered medicinal elements for centuries, their healing powers recorded in ancient texts.” – this sounds wonderful, but an argument of the type: “for centuries we thought that Sun revolves around the Earth” – is not the best one we could use to prove a point. It’s a good thing that at least we stopped (mostly) to kill people if they simply have a different opinion then we do. – So, let’s have a discussion instead! :-)

Nevertheless, as my wife is reading about these things herself in parallel with me and we ordered a few bands – my investigation is not only theoretical, but in a true spirit of experimentalist I’m trying it on myself. – Will let you know the results of that part too ;-)

Note: I appreciate most of the aspects of Yoga and Ayurveda, etc. – but if some of the things don’t make much sense to me – because a person who is “telling” the storyy is missing something or because by construction a particular thing is incorrect – I would like to be open minded – to find the truth and reject some things (accepting many other, right ones)…

What is your opinion about all these? What is your experience?
