Let me start with an “experiment” and then move to some thoughts on meditation.
I actually didn’t plan what happened – I simply didn’t have enough knowledge. It was a discovery for me that when mind becomes very tired – it just shuts down – it stops working with signals coming from outside at least.
I was traveling, a long, few air plane legs, trip and I didn’t sleep almost at all for more than 2 days in a raw. Then I needed to drive a car for about 4 hours. – I was very tired. But I did understand that I’m falling asleep, my reactions were slowing down… – So, I was singing loudly, was talking to myself, slapping the face, etc. …Then at some point (twice actually) my eyes closed for a moment and both times I almost crashed off the lonely night road in the middle of nowhere. If my eyes would close for two moments
– it would probably be the end of story… – I didn’t know that. I didn’t know that at some point – however loud I myself, car radio, etc. were – mind would simply shut down because it was too tired… I’m lucky I’m alive and I learned my lesson.
And if for some reason you don’t know what to do if you are in a similar circumstances – here is a simple tip I got afterwards from an experienced driver: stop, sleep for 10-20 min – it’s hard to sleep for more in a car anyway and you can use alarm if n doubt. Then mind should be able to function for a few more hours.
Why it made me think about meditation? And meditation as a bliss in particular?
Think about it: how many people out there who work long hours, don’t sleep enough, constantly tired, etc. For those people even thinking about, starting meditation practice – is hard or impossible. And how blessed (for whatever reason) those who do have a chance to go deeper into Yoga practices. I kind of knew this theoretically before, but an extreme case of my own experience made it very clear now…
If we have a chance to practice meditation (in whatever form, whatever your belief system is, etc.) – let’s not waste it… and if possible – help others.
All the best wishes! And drive safe!
